With Professor Wieland's passing, the DZHK loses a long-standing companion from the very beginning, a committed shaper of the Heidelberg/Mannheim location and an outstanding scientist. He had been Professor of Experimental Pharmacology at the Mannheim Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University since 2002. He led the Department of Experimental Pharmacology at the European Centre for Angioscience (ECAS), which was newly founded in 2018.
Professor Thomas Wieland has been Principal Investigator at the Heidelberg/Mannheim site since the DZHK was founded in 2012. With his scientific expertise in vascular biology and experimental pharmacology, he has made a significant contribution to the DZHK's research excellence.
From February 2017 to September 2019, Professor Wieland also took on the role of deputy site spokesperson. In this role, he played a key role in strategic development and cross-site coordination. He understood how to build bridges between clinical research and basic science and actively promoted interdisciplinary cooperation between the participating institutions. His work at the DZHK was characterised by scientific integrity and collegiality. His calm, friendly manner helped to bring together different interests and advance translational cardiovascular research.
Thomas Wieland was appointed Professor of Experimental Pharmacology at the Institute for Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Mannheim Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University in 2002. From 2007 onwards, he headed the institute as its managing director. With the founding of the European Centre for Angioscience (ECAS) in 2018, the institute was integrated into the centre, where Professor Wieland led the Department of Experimental Pharmacology.
